Square Enix new IP: Last Remnant (Xbox 360, Playstation 3)

It looks like even the Sony stalwart Square Enix (Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest) is not confident in relying on the Playstation 3 for its next-gen fortunes. When the Xbox 360 rolled out, it looked like a very long shot to get Square Enix RPG epics on the platform – but now it appears that the RPG powerhouse’s latest title is bound for both platforms. Last Remnant’s target platforms have not been revealed yet, so it’s all speculation for now.

Apparently Playstation 3 sales have been so slow that publishers just can’t put their fortunes on its shoulders. Especially in the US the Xbox 360 installed base is large. I still don’t doubt that the PS3 will be ahead of the Xbox 360 in the long run simply due to the massive PS2 legacy and brand recognition, but at this rate Microsoft will make up a lot of ground.

Given Square Enix’s phenomenal design skills, I’m very interested in seeing how Last Remnant shapes up. As for the other RPGs bound on the Xbox 360, I’m mostly interested in Blue Dragon. Lost Odyssey is not done yet, but I’m finding it hard to get excited about it.
